Philip Worthington

shadow monster

This piece of artwork was done by Phillip Worthington around 2013 and he titled this Shadow Monster. I chose this piece to critique because I thought it involved more than one principle of media arts. The following it included was defiantly interactivity with the use of viewer participation from real people being able to create anything they want in front of an illuminated screen. Using their bodies, hands and clothing to make shadows of monsters or anything they like. This also uses the point of view of eye level and profile view to be able to see the picture in full and all parts of the shapes. Duration is part of this referring to the time and how Philips work is only presented for a limited time while people are making the shadows then it’s gone. The last principle it involves is hybridization combining materials for shape, digital media with the use of the projector and the styles brought by each individual. The work that Philip Worthington has made here is an interactive project bringing visitors in making art that brings people laughter and makes them more interested in seeing other pieces. His work inspired people during the process to act playfully doing anything they could think of, he was able to capture that one moment in all to create this amazing project. My opinion on this piece is it’s very unique, when people say art I think of drawings and paintings in museums not necessarily pictures or people participating in them. This artwork made me want to learn and see more of what Philip can do. This wasn’t just his own work done all by himself it involved multiple people just having a good time using different techniques that not all of us have seen before.    🙂
